GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) – A 30-year-old Gaston County Schools band teacher said her students gave her the strength to fight on and beat breast cancer when she was diagnosed at only 29 years old.
“‘How is this possible?’ I was not I did not have the bracket genes, either of them, no family history,” explained Hunter Huss High School Band Director Heaven Watson-Weary about her reaction to her diagnosis that took more than a year to pin down.
“We would be at [a band] competition sometimes and like, I’m legitimately sick, like throwing up behind the bus,” she recounted, “I lost 150 pounds over the two and a half years with me doing that, throwing up stuff.”
Thirteen North Carolina and six out-of-state doctors told her they did not know what was wrong with her for nearly two and a half years.
