AN urgent warning has been issued to Irish motorists as bad habits on the roads are costing them hundreds every year.

New analysis shows that having just three penalty points on your driving licence could increase your motor insurance premium by 10 per cent.

Recent data from Peopl Insurance has revealed nearly half a million drivers across Ireland are overpaying each year because of penalty points from poor driving habits.

Drivers with ten penalty points could end up paying more than twice as much for insurance compared to those with a clean record.

With road fatalities up nearly 20 per cent from this time last year, Peopl Insurance is urging drivers to adopt safer habits to protect both their wallets and their lives.

Over half a million motorists currently have penalty points, with 492,244 having at least three points on their licences.
