DENVER (KDVR) — Denver International Airport started using biometric facial recognition devices at 15 gates where international travelers are departing on Tuesday.

The goal is to promote safe, secure and efficient air travel while speeding up the time it takes to board a plane.

All airports will eventually need a biometric system like this because of a congressional mandate. International passengers at DIA should now be prepared to pause for a photo at their departure gates.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Biometric Exit process will compare the traveler’s photo to images the traveler already has on file with the government such as a passport or visa photo. Airport leaders say this is more accurate and faster than a gate agent doing it manually.
