SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed three landmark bills Tuesday to crack down on political deepfakes ahead of the 2024 election. One law is set to take effect immediately to outlaw the use of artificial intelligence to create false images or videos in political ads 120 days before the election and 60 days thereafter. Campaigns will have to start disclosing AI-generated materials, and online platforms will be required to remove the deceptive material under laws set to be enacted next year. Supporters say the new laws will help curb election disinformation and prevent the erosion of public trust in elections.
