Almost a third of the population in some areas of the country are pensioners at risk of losing the winter fuel allowance cash ahead of winter, new data suggests. 

Analysis of official figures shows that in some parts of England and Wales more than 30 per cent are aged 66 or over and get the money to help heat their homes. 

They include some of the poorest areas like West Devon and Cornwall, alongside other rural areas like North Norfolk, Powys and Lincolnshire.

And our map below shows that many are outside the affluent counties of the South East and can be found in Wales, the South West and the North East. 

Labour has changed the rules for the payment, which can be up to £300, to make it means tested.
