The parents of a Massachusetts teenager who was punished for using AI to complete his homework are suing his school.
Jennifer and Dale Harris claim Hingham High School unfairly targeted their son, arguing he only used artificial intelligence to research his social studies paper, not to write it.
‘They told us our son cheated on a paper, which is not what happened,’ Jennifer told WCVB.
‘In my lay opinion, they violated his civil rights,’ his father Dale, a teacher, added. ‘They treated him and punished him more severely than other students.’
Their son was given a score of 65 out of a 100 for the paper. He was also punished with detention and denied entry to the National Honor Society, jeopardizing his choice of colleges.
