CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WWBT) – University of Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett announced his retirement Friday after 15 years at the school.
“I thought it would be a little longer, to be honest, but it’s been on loan and it’s time for me to give it back.”

Bennett said he’s “no longer the best coach” to lead UVA in the “current environment.”
He said the game is “not in a healthy spot” and called for change.
“I was equipped to do the job the old way,” Bennett said, “and my staff has buoyed me along the way.”
During the press conference, he referenced the NIL (name, image, and likeness), agent involvement with student-athletes and the transfer portal.
Bennett said over the recent fall break he processed what the future would mean and he realized that it was time to step away.
