Working Iowa: Adapting is key in Drake University Artificial Intelligence program [Video]

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Drake University in Des Moines has been offering students a bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence since 2020. Since then, they’ve had to adapt the program in a field that’s rapidly growing and changing.

Chris Porter is the Director of the AI program at Drake.

“When ChatGPT came out in November 2022, we were already in our third year of the program, but even then we had to respond with you know this technology is now in the hands of everybody in a way that we’ve never seen before,” Porter explained.

ChatGPT is easy to use.

“It’s you know having conversations and able to produce content that looks very human-like. And so all the sudden we have to Pivot. How do we now start gearing our curriculum to think about generative AI in particular,” said Porter.

It’s prompting a new class available to students this spring.
