Nashville could soon use AI to improve recycling [Video]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Nashville could soon be using artificial intelligence to make sure the correct items are getting recycled. It’s part of a pilot program brought by the Nashville Department of Waste Services in front of the Metro City Council.

Many in the city say they try their best – being careful to separate what can and can’t be put in the recycling bin.

“For the most part we’re really good about recycling cardboard and cans and breaking them down so that they fit in the trash can and recycling,” Alex Hornsby said.

But it can be tricky. Some don’t realize you can’t recycle things like plastic bags or hoses, or food waste will accidentally get mixed in slowing down the whole process.

“Recycling is very complicated we know that that’s ok. We don’t want residents to feel upset about that – we want to help them,” Jenn Harrman …
