Classroom Champions: N. Charleston school to brew hope for students with disabilities [Video]

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – One Charleston County school is looking to bring back a way for students with disabilities to practice life skills.

It’s a program that means a lot more to Jerry Zucker Middle School than just your average cup of joe.

Special Education Teacher Katie Keith’s class is centered on more than just subjects such as math and science.

“I teach students with disabilities. Some have Autism, some have Down Syndrome and just different intellectual disabilities,” Keith says. “A lot also have speech language impairments so we focus a lot on functional academics, things that would better prepare them for their future.”

She also has her students do things like wiping down the tables, charging the laptops, and doing the laundry.
