MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A marvel of aviation and human ingenuity hovered over a field just west of Putt-Putt Golf and Games off Summer Avenue this August with a mission that had you in mind – an improved, over-the-air WMC television signal to your TV antenna.
The Sikorsky S-61N Rotorcraft helicopter came to Memphis to do some heavy lifting, namely the ten thousand pound so-called “batwing” antenna that had been serving Mid-South viewers of Action News 5 since 1954!
“I can tell you that antenna broadcast a lot of firsts, including the first live remote television news reports,” said Dave Brown, Action News 5’s Chief Meteorologist Emeritus, who’s been watching the station since its infancy.
