From skyrocketing housing costs in coastal metropolises to budget-friendly communities in the heartland, the economic landscape across the U.S. varies dramatically.

Newsweek has mapped the most and least expensive cities to live in, according to 2023 data drawn from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The Bureau recently published regional price parity (RRP) data for 2023—figures for states and metros that give an idea of how price levels of goods and services compare to the national average.

California was by far the most represented state in the list of the top ten most expensive metropolitan areas, based on this number.

Of the top 10, seven were located in the golden state.
