Maryland daycare center faces scrutiny over alarming treatment of toddler [Video]

LA PLATA, Md. — Aareion Thomas says she’s still shocked at a message she received on Jan. 3 while working at Potomac Early Learning Center in La Plata.

She was told a teacher in another classroom put Thomas’ one-year-old daughter, Leilani, in the trash can.

“I asked, what do you mean, put her in the trash can? Like hold her over the trash can or actually put her in?” she asked the person who witnessed the event. “She said no, she put her in the trash can, stepped back, and looked at her.”

According to text messages between Thomas and the witness, Leilani didn’t want her diaper changed, so the teacher “jokingly” placed Leilani in the trash can, deep enough to be covered by other trash.

The witness says when she saw this, she had to come forward.
