In a groundbreaking study, American researchers employed large language models (LLMs) to analyze over 391,000 unique discussions about GLP-1 receptor agonists on Reddit, unveiling high interest in these drugs for weight loss and their psychological benefits.

Originally approved for type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 RAs have recently gained attention for potential weight loss in patients with obesity, irrespective of diabetes presence. The study reveals public interest centered on weight loss experiences, side effect comparisons, access issues, and recognitions of their psychological benefits.

Analyzing discussions from as early as 2021, the researchers used various AI tools to identify key themes and sentiment within the content. They found 97.1% of the discussions centered on GLP-1 RA medications used for weight loss. The surge in volume notably increased after 2022, following FDA’s approval of “Wegovy.”

Nausea emerged as the most reported side effect, with accessibility issues, including insurance concerns and market shortages, also heavily discussed. Despite the focus on the physical effects, positive impacts on motivation and mental health also surfaced within the conversations, showcasing the psychological perception of these drugs.

Through this large-scale AI-based analysis, researchers can gain insights beyond traditional clinical research, highlighting priorities to consider in ongoing health initiatives.
