Alabama State students receive racist text messages following presidential election [Video]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – African American students all across the country have been receiving racist text messages following the results of the presidential election, including several students at Montgomery’s very own Alabama State University.

Though there have been several versions of the message circulating, several of the messages include individuals’ names, references to picking cotton, plantations, slavery, and even racial slurs.

“I was really confused because it was an unknown number,” Mattison Downs, a student at ASU who received one of these messages said. “I was like, ‘How do y’all know my name, how do y‘all know my number? I’m not from here.’”

Students like Downs say these targeted messages have made them feel unsafe.

“It was really scary, and then seeing the amount of people, because it was thousands, if not more people who received the message,” she said.
