BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond announced that he is retiring from the Birmingham Police Department.
Thurmond’s last day will be Friday, Nov. 29.
He turns 50 this year and says he’s spent 26 years with BPD. He says he’ll have to see what opportunities present themselves next.
Thurmond says he decided this four or five months ago, and nothing with leadership or recent events impacted his decision.
“After 26 years of service and much thought and prayer, I began to have this discussion with my family about four to five months ago,” said Thurmond. ”I have served the citizens of Birmingham and the Birmingham Police Department for over half of my life, and I am forever grateful for all of the friends and memories.
