DE PERE, Wis. (WBAY) – Friday was signing day at De Pere High School, but not for an athlete. Ray Fitzl signed on as a masonry apprentice with Miron Construction.
He has already been working at the Preble High School project and worked on the Denmark Elementary School addition.
Fitzl says he has found the people to be welcoming.
“I was scared, worried, nervous I wouldn’t be able to pull my weight,” said Fitzl. “To be what the other guys needed to be. I wanted to be there to help them, and I didn’t know if I could amount to that.”
As an apprentice, Fitzl will be on a project assigned to a mentor and attend training throughout the year.
Miron Construction says this has been a record year for their youth apprenticeship program, with 31 apprentices statewide.
