US President Donald Trump has announced one of the biggest US government investments in history as he hosted some of the world’s largest tech companies at the White House, with $US500 billion ($A803 billion) set to be ploughed into AI infrastructure.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison stood alongside Mr Trump on day two of his presidency at the White House on Tuesday afternoon (local time) to announce the private sector investment in artificial intelligence.

The new project will see the tech giants form a partnership called ‘Stargate’, with the companies tipping in $US100 billion in investments, with President Trump announcing plans to add up to $US500 billion in investments coming years.

“(We are) building the physical and virtual infrastructure to power the next generation of AI including data centres around the country,” Mr Trump said.
