Former Poteau High School head football coach under investigation by Oklahoma State Board of Education [Video]

POTEAU, Okla. (KNWA/KFTA) — A sudden and surprise resignation by an Oklahoma high school football coach is now under investigation by the state’s board of education.

Poteau High School head football coach Greg Werner, who resigned just days before the season started, is being investigated by the Oklahoma State Board of Education.

In late August, Werner suddenly quit and left the school.

In the days following his departure Poteau, Public Schools Superintendent Scott Kempenich would not say why Werner suddenly quit or why it happened when it did.

“I thought he was very professional and did a good job as coach,” Kempenich said.

OSBE confirmed on Wednesday that Werner is under investigation by their department, but they too stopped short of saying why.

Werner was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame in 2022 and won a 4A state title in 2019.

In addition to coaching at Poteau, he has also had stints at Broken Bow and Van Buren.
