Billboards and other advertising boldly suggest you might need a lawyer to file a lawsuit – preferably against a defendant with deep pockets. And state leaders like House Speaker Rep. Jon Burns (R-Newington) say such lawsuits “have gotten way out of whack” and are hurting Georgia businesses.
Backers of lawsuit reform cite a University of Georgia poll – commissioned by the metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. It asked Georgia voters if such lawsuits filed against businesses hurt the state’s economy:
- 71% of respondents agreed
- 21.9% disagreed
- 7.1% said they didn’t know
In particular, backers of lawsuit reform want to limit damages people can seek against the owners of property who were themselves uninvolved in whatever incident triggered the lawsuit.
