MOUNDVILLE, Ala. (WBRC) – In front of a packed Hale County High School gym and his New Orleans Pelicans teammates, Herb Jones’ jersey was retired at his alma mater.
Jones led the Wildcats to their first and only state basketball championship in 2017. From there, he was a standout player with the Alabama Crimson Tide before being drafted by the Pelicans.
“I mean it’s still crazy,” Jones said. “It’s a huge deal to the community. I’m just glad I was able to set a good example for the community and this school.”
Alabama head basketball coach Nate Oats, who was there before boarding a flight to Chapel Hill for the SEC/ACC Challenge, told the crowd that without Herb Jones, Alabama’s recent success wouldn’t have been possible.
