DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – If you commute to or from Summerville and Charleston, you may be looking at some serious delays.
Starting July 17, the South Carolina Department of Transportation is doing alternative lane closures for Highway 61.
Commuters are already noticing a “massive” difference in their travel times.
“As far forward I could see, cars, cars, cars,” commuter Mallory Hill says. “I thought maybe there had to be a lane closed after seeing this online, and then a wreck on top of it. There’s no way you have this amount of traffic.”
Hill’s commute typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, but with the new traffic pattern, it nearly doubles.
She’s not the only one getting headaches.
“Those of us that live or work on 61 from the Summerville side. It’s massive delays, both in the morning and afternoon,” commuter Racena Bowen says.
