Wigan is probably best known for its prized selection of northern delicacies – most famously of course, the Wigan bap. 

And as the host of the World Pie Eating Championship, it shouldn’t be wrong to think the city knows how to prepare some good grub. 

But, unbelievably, Wigan’s culinary prowess has been thrown into disrepute after it was found to have the lowest average food hygiene rating in the UK. 

Analysis of Food Standards Agency data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, found the North West town scored 3.92 on average across 440 food venues. 

It was the only city out of all 58 surveyed to have scored less than four on average, with the second lowest – Birmingham – rated 4.08 on average.
