FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) – Susan Carney will preside as the new Chief Justice of the Alaska Supreme Court beginning in January.
The court will be a historic one, comprised of a female majority for the first time in the state’s history.
“I’m a big fan of it, being a woman,” Carney said. “I think it’s a long time coming.”
When asked about the significance of the majority, Carney added, “It’s very important for any individual court and court system to reflect the people that we serve.”
While the court may be majority female, the latest census data indicates there are 38,477 more men than women in the state.
Carney is the second female to serve as Chief Justice of Alaska’s Supreme Court.
“I have sort of followed now-Senior Justice [Dana] Fabe throughout Alaska,” Carney said.
Fabe was the first woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Court when she took over the mantle in 2000.
