L.A. looks to ban landlords from using AI to set rent prices [Video]

Two Los Angeles City Councilmembers introduce a motion to prevent companies from using algorithm-based tools to set rent prices.

The motion, introduced by Councilmembers Heather Hutt and Monica Rodriguez, says that the rent-setting software some large landlords are using inflates prices and increases eviction rates.

Hutt says the AI software can be discriminatory, setting higher prices for potential renters based on their race, income, and where they live. It can also manipulate prices so that two people looking at the exact same apartment online will see two different rents listed.

A similar motion was recently introduced in San Francisco.
