When will Hanover County move to secure water self-sufficiency?
Dear Editor,
Hanover County’s historic three-day water outage was timely!
Abruptly thrust over 50,000 residents into an immersive “Living History” experience.
No toilets, no showers, no plumbing, and disheveled appearances resulting from that.
Just like back in Patrick Henry’s 1700s colonial times!
Not the fault of the new Hanover County Administrator.
Nor Hanover’s current Public Works Director who briefly faced the media.
Nor totally Richmond City’s antiquated 1920s-vintage public works.
Hanover County Republican Committee’s lock-step Board of Supervisors’ 1900s decisions.
Clearly did not provide self-sufficient waterworks to handle Hanover’s 100,000-plus population.
Hanover County has the Pamunkey River and a number of ponds throughout the county.
And plenty of western third, and eastern third, farmland that could have reservoir(s) built.
But let the Doswell water treatment plant, some water towers like at the Airpark, etc., be it.
Insufficiency smacks of incompetency when dealing with “Urban Service Area” increasing loads.
Infrastructure development funds have been available for years from the U.S. Government.
