MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Six months post-op from receiving his new kidney — 17-year-old Devin Smith — is healing like a pro.
“I feel like a new person,” said Devin. “I have so much more energy.”
The Murphy High School senior — who has been living with kidney disease his entire life — underwent a life-saving transplant in April at UAB Hospital.
“April 12, 2024 at 12 — noon. Lee: You know the exact time? — Yes, I will never forget that,” said Erica Watson, Devin’s mom.
They stayed in Birmingham for nearly two months following the surgery and have been traveling back and forth for monthly checkups. They tell us last week was like seeing staff who had become family.
“They were so nice. Everything went so smoothly. Everyone was so sweet — so nice. I love everyone there. I really do,” said Erica.
