PORTLAND, Maine — Law enforcement agencies in Maine are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline police report writing.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Portland Police Department are among a few agencies who have tested a new AI-powered software called “Draft One” that claims to reduce the time spent on paperwork.
“It was new to us and it was a great opportunity to use the technology,” Lt. James Estabrook said.
The AI system works by processing audio captured through police body cameras to generate detailed reports in seconds. Portland Police Major Jason King says it has already been able to cut time spent on writing reports in half for officers.
King says the department wrote 10,000 police reports over the past year.
