Nebraska lawmakers propose lab meat ban, farm data privacy, water task force [Video]

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Governor Jim Pillen gathered with senators Tuesday morning, bringing a slate of legislation aimed at protecting Nebraska agriculture, water and other resources.

Sen. Barry DeKay will introduce a bill to ban lab grown meat from being distributed or sold in Nebraska. He also shared plans for the improvement of labeling of meat versus meat substitutes.

“Until, or unless, there are clear labeling rules that adequately disclose that cultured meat is not real meat, its sale allows lab meats to unfairly benefit from industry investments and marketing and production by an industry-backed organization whose primary goal is to end animal husbandry, which is so important to our state,” said Sen. DeKay.

When asked if lab grown meat is currently being sold in Nebraska, Sen. DeKay said no. Gov. Pillen said it’s a preventative measure to protect the beef industry from what’s happened in the dairy industry.
