New project using AI could make it easier to teach in rural areas [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) -Thanks to a grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation and led by Black Hills Special Services Cooperative’s Compass division in partnership with the University of South Dakota, a new project aims to reduce teacher workloads in rural areas.

The intention is to address teacher shortages and improve educational outcomes in under-resourced communities through AI-driven support, lesson planning, resource creation, and administrative tasks. Black Hills Special Services Cooperative’s Compass division is investigating how AI can be used to improve teacher retention and job satisfaction.

When used beneficially, AI has the potential to transform how teachers approach their work. It can free up time to focus more on students and the things they’re passionate about. The study will explore how these tools can reduce workloads while maintaining or even improving the quality of education.
