If there seems to be an overriding philosophy in cherry pick’s world, it’s that one can never own enough effects pedals. On sorry place, her evidently impressive arsenal gets endless amounts of use, gloriously abused to the max—vocals bathed in reverbed layers of floral sludge, the guitars all rolling waves of double-fuzzed distortion.

cherry pick’s sonic weaponry—all hail her Electro-Harmonix Oceans Eleven, Big Muff, JHS Morning Glory—are a big reason the EP’s four tracks are so beautifully deceptive. The songs are more or less standard length, clocking in at around four minutes, yet they play out as sprawling soundscapes, noise-glazed and epic. You don’t listen to sorry place as much as you immerse yourself in an experience.

That makes the digital release perfect for those times when you’re happy to be in your own head.
