ALBANY, Oregon — An Albany middle school custodian is being hailed as a hero after saving a sixth grader who was choking on her lunch.
The incident occurred in mid-December at Calapooia Middle School. Aaron Luckman, the school’s head custodian, sprang into action when he noticed sixth grader Miria Reed struggling to breathe after a piece of her burger became lodged in her throat.
“I mean, it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I’m going to save her life.’ It was, ‘This kid’s choking; let’s get them breathing,’” Luckman said.
Reed described the terrifying experience: “I remember the food got lodged in my throat, and I tried to breathe through my nose, but that didn’t really work.”
