Parents sue high school after son punished for using AI on history paper [Video]

HINGHAM, Mass. (CNN) – The parents of a Massachusetts high school student are suing their son’s school.

They say he was unfairly punished for using artificial intelligence on a history paper.

Jennifer and Dale Harris say Hingham High School accused their son of cheating, which they say isn’t true.

In their lawsuit, the parents say he only used AI as a tool for research, not to write the paper.

They say the school handbook didn’t mention the use of AI until after this incident.

The student received detention, and his grade suffered as well.

The family says this kept him out of the National Honor Society and may impact his college options.

“He got a perfect score on the ACT, and he’s looking to go to Standford or MIT or some of the top schools, and he’s missed the opportunity already for rolling admissions,” Jennifer Harris said.
