Parents weigh in on new Lancaster County Schools policy prohibiting cell phones [Video]

INDIAN LAND, S.C. (WBTV) – The Lancaster County School District will prohibit cell phones at all of its schools, falling in line with a statewide policy against student cell phone use.

The school district sent a letter to parents and students Tuesday, advising them of the new policy. It will require students turn off their phones when they enter school, and stow them in their backpacks.

If parents need to reach their child during the school day, they will have to go through the school’s front office.

″I don’t really have a problem with any of the rules they have, as long as I can get in touch with [my son],” Louis Shortino, who has a middle-schooler, said.

The school district will begin disciplining high school students who break the rules in January.

Schools across South Carolina have been finalizing policies prohibiting cell phone use in schools after a mandate from the SC Department of Education.
