MUSKEGON, Mich. — September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and staff with Hackley Public Library in Muskegon are encouraging Michiganders to get involved with their local libraries.
Library Card Sign-up Month was first implemented in 1987, when Secretary of Education William Bennett said every child should have and use a library card. Now, people are urged to get a library card each September.
Mallory Metzger, marketing and program coordinator at Hackley Public Library, said libraries provide a variety of resources—not just books. This includes things like DVDs, magazines and music, as well as digital resources like audiobooks and e-books.
Many libraries, including Hackley Public Library, also offer discounts to local cultural centers and attractions.
