PIERRE, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – A South Dakota teacher is about to experience the opportunity of a lifetime, thanks to the National Geographic Society.
Bree Oatman travels an hour every day to get from Pierre to Lower Brule High School, where she is a science teacher.
Thanks to her love for one flightless bird, Oatman will be traveling a lot further next week.
“I got another one too, but it arrived today,” Oatman said about a sweater she was wearing during an interview with Dakota News Now.
When asked what percentage of her decision to go to Antarctica was to see penguins.
“I mean, probably 95%,” Oatman said.
Oatman is one of just 35 teachers selected as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow out of a nationwide pool of applicants.
She will be traveling all the way to Rapid City then Buenos Aires, then Ushuaia Argentina, before she takes a boat to the nearby peninsula.
