Tesco could use AI to help Clubcard customers eat healthier [Video]

Tesco could use Clubcard card data to “nudge” shoppers away from unhealthy food, its Irish boss has said, writes Emily Hawkins.

Co. Cork native Ken Murphy, head of Britain’s largest supermarket chain, said loyalty card data could be used to monitor the nutritional value of shoppers’ purchases.

Artificial intelligence would then give customers suggestions on what choices to make instead.

“I can see it nudging you, saying: ‘look, I’ve noticed… that in your shopping basket your sodium salt content is 250 per cent of your daily recommended allowance. I would recommend you substitute this, this and this for lower sodium products to improve your heart health’,” Mr Murphy said at an industry conference this week.

He described this use of AI as “very simple stuff” and said it could make a big difference to people’s wellbeing.

The card, launched in 1995, has more than 20million members.
