Are you wondering if you should work as a subcontractor or a solo virtual assistant? In this video, I’ll break down the differences between the two options so you can decide what’s best for you and your business.
First, let’s define the roles: A subcontractor works under another virtual assistant or agency, completing tasks for clients that the agency has secured. As the owner of a VA agency, I have four amazing subcontractors on my team. I secure the clients, and they handle the work, which can be a great way to gain experience without having to find clients yourself.
On the other hand, a solo virtual assistant is responsible for securing their own clients, managing all communications, and setting their own rates. While this gives you more control, it also comes with the added responsibility of business development.
In this video, I also discuss whether you can do both roles at once (spoiler: yes, you can!), what to consider about non-compete agreements, and how payment structures differ. As a subcontractor, you might earn a lower hourly rate because the agency often takes a percentage to cover client management and administrative costs. However, working as a subcontractor can be a great way to get started, build skills, and learn from experienced VAs.
