Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Two Haitian journalists were tragically killed Tuesday, December 24, while covering the reopening of a hospital in the capital city. The attack, attributed to a gang coalition known as “Viv ansanm” (Living Together), highlights the escalating violence plaguing Haiti.
Markenzy Nathoux and Jimmy Jean, both members of the Online Media Collective (CMEL), were fatally shot during the attack on the Hospital of the State University of Haiti (HUEH). Robest Dimanche, a spokesperson for CMEL, confirmed the deaths to the Associated press.
“Markenzy Nathoux and Jimmy Jean were assassinated on December 24th during the attack by the ‘Viv ansanm’ gang coalition during the reopening of the HUEH,” Dimanche said.
Other journalists present at the scene sustained injuries and were treated at another public hospital in Port-au-Prince.
