GROVE HILL, Ala. (WALA) – Pregnant women in Clarke County are now faced with a dilemma. They will likely have to have scheduled inductions, drive 80 or more miles while in labor or give birth in the ER.
It’s a reality they’re looking at after Grove Hill Memorial Hospital closed it’s labor and delivery unit on Friday.
Kaylyn Stewart, mother of a baby born at Grove Hill Memorial said, “I don’t think that mothers and families are even their priority. We’re not making them the money.”
“When I first found out I was like, ‘what am I going to do next?” said D’Akendria Jenkins.
Jessica Overstreet is a mother of four and 18 weeks pregnant with her fifth. She said, “People in these rural areas, we’ve been overlooked and forgotten for so long. I believe we’ve become desensitized to it.”
