New preliminary test results are out from the Vermont Agency of Education’s assessment of the past academic year, but some district leaders said those numbers don’t tell the full story.This was the second year students took the tests in Vermont, which measure students’ proficiency on core curriculum including English Language Arts (ELA), Math and the Next Generation Science Standards. While the results are only preliminary right now, the agency said state averages point to academic proficiency remaining steady. Students statewide averaged the highest in ELA (45-58%), according to the agency. That was followed by science (41-46%) and then math (30-47%). But some school leaders in the state said these results should be taken with a grain of salt. Wilmer Chavarria, Winooski superintendent, said it’s difficult to compare the results from his schools to others around the state.
